Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras was founded in São Paulo in 1914 by Italian immigrants, originally known as Palestra Italia. The club's green-and-white horizontal stripes are among the most recognisable in Brazilian football, worn by a side that has accumulated domestic and continental honours across more than a century of competition.
