About the club

In Lamego you climb to the Remédios sanctuary up 686 steps of baroque staircase, and the city's football lives right next door, at the Estádio Municipal de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. That is home to branch number 63 of Sporting CP, founded in June 1934, the dean of sport in Lamego and nine times champion of the AF Viseu Divisão de Honra, from the first title in 1954/55 to the last in 2010/11, with honourable spells in Portugal's old national second and third tiers. This Douro academy sent players to Portugal's big three and beyond: Ailton wore the shirts of Sporting, FC Porto and Boavista, Bené played for FC Porto, Mauro reached Club Brugge. In 2025, having just turned 90, the club came to the brink of closing its doors, until Marco Rodrigues took it on and put teams back on the pitch with the whole city behind them. Survival is a trophy too, and this club has just won it.
