About the country

Belgium is not traditionally associated with green and white stripes, but certain clubs have long made the pattern their own. Royal Cercle Sportif Verviétois, from the Walloon city of Verviers in the province of Liège, is the sole Belgian representative in this archive. Founded in the nineteenth century, the club adopted horizontal green and white stripes as a lasting visual identity. A small entry for Belgium, but one that reflects how this particular colour combination has quietly threaded its way through European football, even in countries where other palettes tend to dominate.
