Singapore is one of the oldest cradles of Asian football: its football association dates back to 1892, in British colonial port days, and for decades the city state played in neighbouring Malaysia's championship, filling the old Kallang with the roar that became famous, the Kallang Roar. The exit from the Malaysian league in 1994, right after an epic Malaysia Cup triumph with Fandi Ahmad, forced the country to invent its own competition: the S.League was born in 1996, renamed the Singapore Premier League in 2018, and is played in a unique ecosystem of neighbourhood clubs in a country smaller than London. The national team's Lions hold four Southeast Asian championships, and local football lives squeezed between skyscrapers, with community stadiums built into sports hubs. From that vertical, compact world comes the collection's Singaporean representation, with the Eagles of Geylang proving that green and white hoops can live on the equator too.
